McMorris Rodgers Statement on Department of Justice’s Indictment of Chinese Hackers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05), the Republican Leader on the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce, released the following statement:
“The indictment unsealed in Spokane that prosecutes two Chinese hackers for their prolific threat to U.S. networks is just another example of the Chinese Communist Party stopping at nothing to be a global power. President Donald Trump, the Department of Justice, the FBI, and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington William Hyslop are sending a strong signal today that America won’t let the CCP go unchecked for their ruthless criminal enterprise of stealing our trade secrets and using our technology to get ahead. I applaud the Trump administration for their unwavering investigative work and for seeking justice on behalf of the targeted American industries, including the Department of Energy’s Hanford Site in Eastern Washington.”
“No other country is better equipped than America to lead on emerging technologies, the development of a COVID19 vaccine, and other breakthrough discoveries. To win the future, lead a new era of innovation, and beat China, this type of tough and strong leadership to expose the CCP and hold it accountable must continue.”

EXCERPT: “Republicans aim to level the playing field with an unprecedented legislative package comprised of 15 bills that would force the federal government to identify the areas where it is lagging behind China and work with the private sector to spur growth. This includes beefing up American investments into A.I., facial recognition technology, blockchains, quantum computing, and unmanned delivery services—all areas where China is outpacing the United States due to massive investments.
“The legislative package is one of the largest and most comprehensive currently circulating on Capitol Hill. It is part of a larger push by Republican members in the House and Senate to combat China’s massive investment in cutting edge tech at a time when the world is becoming increasingly dependent on the communist regime.”
