McMorris Rodgers Tours Malden and Pine City

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Today, Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) visited the towns of Malden and Pine City which have been impacted by this week’s fires. As Cathy said on Facebook following the visit, “It took my breath away to see the devastation in Malden and Pine City today. The city hall, post office, and fire station are all gone. 85 homes and surrounding farmland are destroyed, too. The community church up on the hill still stood despite fire damage on the backside. People had no time to prepare. They saw the fire. The next minute Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers and Malden Mayor Chris Ferrell urged everyone to evacuate. They literally had only minutes. It’s a miracle no lives were lost. It’s a tribute to neighbor helping neighbor. I thank all who have responded — firefighters, local officials, the veteran center, the Red Cross, and many more.”

McMorris Rodgers also responded early this week to news of the fires. She said, “My prayers for safety go out to all of the families impacted. I will be working with and supporting state and local officials and doing everything I can on the federal level to ensure our communities have the resources they need to rebuild. My team and I are continuing to monitor the ongoing fires and will support fire responders in containing these fires however possible.”
