A Step Towards Fiscal Responsibility

Budget & Fiscal Responsibility

Great news! → The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability just passed my bill to restore the American people’s “power of the purse” and review more than $500 billion currently funding programs that have not been approved by Congress.

This misuse of taxpayer dollars is a dangerous symptom of the reckless spending and lack of accountability the American people have grown tired of. The Unauthorized Spending Accountability (USA) Act – which I first introduced in 2016 – is a long overdue step towards fixing our broken budget process and helping us get back to fiscal responsibility.

What the bill does is simple: It forces Congress to do its job to review, rethink, and possibly eliminate government programs. If a program is not authorized, Congress will reduce its funding over a period of three years. If the program remains unauthorized after three years, it can no longer receive funding.

With our national debt soaring above $32 trillion, this is an idea whose time has come. I’m grateful to my colleagues on the Oversight Committee for helping me advance it today, but our work isn’t done yet. It’s time to get this critical legislation through the House and on to the president’s desk to be signed into law, so be on the lookout for more updates soon!
