Coming Together To Help Prevent Suicide
Just this morning, the CDC announced that drug overdose deaths reached a new all-time high in 2021, taking the lives of more than 107,000 Americans. This devastating trend is more proof that young adults in our communities are facing an unprecedented mental health and opioid crisis.
The good news is that the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee took bipartisan action today to address this crisis by passing my Restoring Hope and Mental Health and Well-Being Act. This bill will reauthorize critical Garret Lee Smith Memorial programs that support community-based youth and young adult suicide prevention efforts.
This is an important step that I’m proud we took. But our work can’t end here. We must build on this progress, get this bill signed into law, and turn despair into hope for people and their families. I look forward to this bill being passed by the full committee next week, and I will be sure to keep you updated on our progress.
