Empowering People with Disabilities
This week was filled with celebrating every person’s God-given abilities and potential! In case you missed it, I wanted to share a few of my favorite highlights.
On Tuesday, we celebrated the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act being signed into law! This landmark legislation has given people the courage to dream and seize opportunities to build a better life, and it has stood the test of time as one of the most significant civil rights achievements of our lifetime.
On Wednesday, I was honored to receive Melwood Ability’s Advocacy Award with Congressman Bobby Scott for our bipartisan work to end the outdated practice of paying people with disabilities a subminimum wage. What made it even more special was having Cole by my side!
Finally, I continued my work this week to expand on the ABLE Act, which was signed into law in 2014. As you know, this legislation created Section 529A tax-exempt savings accounts to empower people with disabilities to save more of what they earn and to explore the workforce.
This Congress, we are working on the ABLE Age Adjustment Act to lift the age of eligibility for opening an ABLE account from 26 to 46 to help even more people in the disability community find a job they love and save for the future. We’ve made some great progress moving this legislation, and this afternoon I urged my colleagues in the Senate to help us get it across the finish line.

As always, I am so grateful for the support of all the warriors for human dignity in our community. Your partnership is critical as we continue doing everything we can to help bring more people off the sidelines, celebrate every person’s value, and ensure they have an opportunity to build a better life.
