Freedom of the Press in the Western Hemisphere

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) stood in support of H. Res. 536, a resolution to support freedom of the press in Latin America and the Caribbean. The bill condemns violations of press freedoms and violence against journalists, bloggers, and individuals exercising their right to freedom of speech.

McMorris Rodgers released the following statement:

“Freedom of the press is a pillar on which all free and prosperous societies are built. The persecution of those seeking free expression should not be tolerated. Regime hostility toward journalists in Cuba, Ecuador, and Mexico violates basic civil rights and the Inter-American democratic charter.”

H. Res. 536 was adopted by the House with a 399 – 2 vote.
