Honoring Gold Star Mothers

Military & National Security

As a mother, I can think of no greater pain than losing a child in combat. Waking up to the knock on the door in the middle of the night. Seeing the 50 stars and 13 red and white stripes draped over a casket. Hearing the sound of Taps and a twenty-one gun salute. Being handed that folded flag on behalf of a grateful nation. Earning a new title – Gold Star Mother.

The grief is heart-piercing, and it’s been felt by every mother in our country whose son or daughter made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. On Gold Star Mother’s Day, we remember the price these moms paid with their own flesh and blood. We reflect with gratitude on the selflessness and heroism of the child they can no longer hold safely in their arms.

Today, we say thank you.

We also honor every other family member who has lost someone in service to our country, as today marks the close of Gold Star Family Week. Your loved one’s sacrifice is not forgotten, and their legacy will live on forever.

May God continue to bless our Gold Star Mothers and their families, and keep watch over all those still serving.
