Washington, D.C. (May 28, 2021) – Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) and Congresswoman Katherine Clark (MA-05) introduced a bipartisan resolution to honor the women who served during World War II. The resolution also recognizes the important role of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, the members of which were critical to the country’s success in WWII and foundational to women receiving the same rank, recognition, and benefits as male soldiers.

“Those who bravely served our nation during World War II are a part of the Greatest Generation, and the women among them were trailblazers,” said Rodgers. “The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps served in every theater of the war and played an indispensable role in leading America to victory. These women, including the many who enlisted from Eastern Washington, were among the most courageous our nation has ever seen, and we owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude for their service and sacrifice to the United States.”

NOTE: The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps was established in 1942. WAACs served in support of the Army, but not within. It wasn’t until 1943 that the Army removed the auxiliary status, making Women’s Army Corps members an official part of the U.S. Army. Only then were women given equal status to the men they served alongside. Representative Edith Nourse Rogers was responsible for both of these advancements in the United States Military.
