McMorris Rodgers Co-Sponsors Legislation to Protect People with Pre-Existing Conditions
WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 16, 2017) — Today, Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement after joining as a cosponsor of the Pre-Existing Conditions Protection Act of 2017. Introduced by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, this legislation ensures that individuals with pre-existing conditions here in Eastern Washington, and all across the country, are guaranteed access to health coverage.
“Every American, including those with disabilities or other pre-existing conditions, should have access to affordable coverage that puts patients back in control of their health care decisions. With this bill, we are giving individuals with pre-existing conditions the peace of mind that they will have protections beyond Obamacare. As we continue to take the necessary steps to repeal Obamacare and improve our nation’s health care, we will pursue a people-first approach that offers long-term solutions that work for everyone. We want to lower costs, increase the number of choices, and give more control back to the American people. This is a top priority for me, and I’m proud to cosponsor Chairman Walden’s legislation. I strongly encourage my colleagues to do the same,” said McMorris Rodgers.
This legislation works to guarantee access to coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, creates a prohibition on pre-existing condition benefit exclusions, and bans premium rating based off the health status of an individual. It reaffirms Rep. McMorris Rodgers and other House Republicans’ commitment to protecting those with pre-existing conditions and is an important step to ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, income, medical conditions, or circumstances has access to quality and affordable medical care for them and their families. This is just the start, and the Congresswoman remains committed to repealing Obamacare and replacing it with a patient-centered approach that will provide a 21st Century health care system for all Americans.
Note: Rep. McMorris Rodgers has been a leader in the effort to maintain health insurance coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. In a leadership press conference last month, she reaffirmed her commitment to these protections. Rep. McMorris Rodgers currently serves on the Health Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
