McMorris Rodgers, a senior leader on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said:
“We need to have Cures 2.0 because one of the best ways we can continue to lead as a country is to be investing in the research around new cures and breakthroughs. You think about the impact of curing Alzheimer’s… or even just addressing early onset Alzheimer’s and what that would do as far as lowering costs. If we could delay the onset of Alzheimer’s by five years it would have a tremendous impact on people’s lives, as well as our health care system. That is just one example.
“That is where America should be focusing. It’s on making sure that we are focusing on giving people the choices they need within health insurance… [There’s] also continuing to invest as a country in the research to grow the economy, create jobs, improve the lives of millions of people, and address the cost curve in entitlement programs. You look at what is driving up federal government spending—it’s the entitlement programs. If we could cure diseases like Alzheimer’s that would have tremendous impact on the estimated health care costs within our system.”
