McMorris Rodgers Statement on the Afghanistan Crisis
Spokane, WA (August 26, 2021) – Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) today released the following statement on the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan:
“The developments coming out of Afghanistan today are devastating. America is less safe today because of President Biden’s failed leadership. The decision to pull out troops before getting Americans out first was a major miscalculation, and it has created the very real national security and humanitarian crisis unfolding before our eyes. The lack of preparedness by the Biden administration is putting American lives at risk, and that is unacceptable.
“The Taliban is reclaiming control of the region. People cannot get to the airport in Kabul to be evacuated. We have Americans, Afghan interpreters, and partners stranded behind enemy lines. This is our worst fear becoming a reality.
“I am strongly urging President Biden to take immediate action to ensure the safe evacuation of every American and Afghan partner. That is our mission and obligation, and we should not leave until it is accomplished. We must keep all options on the table and seriously consider delaying the arbitrary August 31 deadline.
“My prayers go out to those who have loved ones on the ground, especially the families of the three U.S. Marines who are confirmed injured at this time. May God bless and keep our troops safe in Afghanistan.”
NOTE: At the time of this statement, the Pentagon has confirmed 2 explosions outside the airport in Kabul. At least 3 U.S. Marines are confirmed injured.
