Washington, D.C.– Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Republican Subcommittee Leader on the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce, released the following statement on the China Task Force’s report on the Chinese Communist Party’s economic and security threats to America.

“I applaud Leader McCarthy, Chairman McCaul, and every member of the China Task Force for their work on this comprehensive report and for identifying actions America must take to beat China and lead in the global economy. The Chinese Communist Party has a long history of aggressive actions to get ahead, oppress human rights, and expand their power and influence

Here is what this report makes clearer than ever before. When America leads and innovates, the CCP steals and lies. When America upholds free speech, China censors. When America empowers individuals and promotes freedom, the CCP surveils, controls and aids other hostile regimes. This is a battle for the ideals that have defined our way of life and made America a beacon of hope for billions of people around the world.

For America to win the future, I agree Congress should make these Task Force recommendations a priority. We took action on solutions yesterday by passing the American COMPETE Act. This is a package of bills I led on with my colleagues for America to win the race against China in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. It passed with overwhelming bipartisan support on both the Energy and Commerce Committee and in the People’s House.

Note: The China Task Force Report included recommendations that Congress take action on the American Competitiveness on More Productive Emerging Tech Economy (COMPETE) Act (H.R. 8132). This bill is led by McMorris Rodgers and Republican members on the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce. It passed the House by voice vote on Tuesday and aims to restore American global competitiveness in emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, 3D printing, and quantum computing.
