McMorris Rodgers: Empowering Individuals Across Eastern Washington
WASHINGTON, DC– Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) issued the following statement today after the House passed H.R. 647, the bipartisan Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, which allows individuals with disabilities to save for their futures through the creation of tax-free savings accounts.
“Tonight the House spoke for millions of Americans with disabilities. We spoke to give them a better life; to provide them with greater opportunities; and to empower them to reach their full potential. As the mom of a seven-year old son with Down syndrome, today my heart is full – because I know firsthand how federal policies can limit the opportunities for those with disabilities. The ABLE Act will change that.
“This overwhelmingly bipartisan bill will empower individuals across Eastern Washington – through tax-free savings accounts – to save for college, retirement, and other future expenses. As part of America’s New Congress, we are here to advance real solutions. Solutions that make people’s lives better. Solutions that empowerall Americans – no matter where they come from or how much money they make or what challenges they face. I applaud the many disability groups that have advocated, for so many years, to secure passage of legislation that is as commonsense as it is compassionate. It will empower millions – like my son, Cole – with the opportunity to have a better life. Andthat is why we are here.”
The ABLE Act encourages tax-free savings for qualified expenses such as education, housing and transportation by amending Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code, working just like a 529 education savings plan.
