Price Controls Are Not The Answer
Americans are paying record high prices at the pump. In Washington State, the average price of gas soared to a shocking $5.18 a gallon in May. But what’s driving these prices to such devastating heights? Since their efforts to blame the price hike squarely on Putin’s invasion of Ukraine (even though prices were rising well before then) failed, President Biden and House Democrats now want you to think it’s ‘price gouging’ by oil companies.
This simply isn’t true. You’re not paying more at the pump because of some grand conspiracy that companies have suddenly decided to charge unaffordable prices. What we are seeing is a direct result of Biden’s policies to shut down American Energy, out-of-control spending that has sent inflation through the roof, and a supply chain crisis fueled by COVID-19 shutdowns.
Now, rather than address the root causes of the problem, House Democrats are following the lead of Soviet Russia and Venezuela by trying to impose socialist price controls on gasoline.
Sound familiar? That’s because the United States tried this in the 1970s and all we got in return were mile-long gas lines and devastating supply shortages. The bottom line is that free enterprise — not socialism — is the proven and best way forward to restore prosperity and optimism for the hardworking people of this country. I’m urging my colleagues to stop this madness, abandon this radical agenda, and work across the aisle to flip the switch on American energy.
