Standing with the Uyghur People

The significance of what’s happening in China right now cannot be overstated. After years of enduring the most extreme COVID restrictions in the world, the Chinese people have courageously taken to the streets in protest against Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). They have finally had enough.

Unfortunately, lockdowns and pandemic fear mongering are not the first time the CCP has tried to control its people at all costs. For nearly a decade, the government has carried out the heinous genocide of the Uyghur population in a sickening display of their capacity to wage a campaign of cruelty, terror, and oppression against its own people.

This has to stop. The Chinese Communist Party must be held accountable for their barbaric human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region – from forced labor and concentration camps to the sterilization of Uyghur women.

That’s why I helped pass the Uyghur Policy Act in the House last week. This bipartisan bill requires the State Department to make it a top priority to respond to the genocide and egregious human rights abuses against the Uyghur people and push back on the CCP’s efforts to silence them.

The Uyghur people need our support. America is the beacon of freedom for the rest of the world, and we have a responsibility to lead by example. I was proud to stand with the Uyghurs this week, and I will continue doing everything I can in the People’s House to bring an end to their religious and cultural persecution.
