Supporting Veterans When They Come Home

Veterans

As the wife of a Navy veteran, I understand the obstacles our soldiers face when they return home from the battlefield. The return to civilian life is so much more than just taking off a uniform with many of our veterans battling the invisible scars of war each and every day.

The reality is that our servicemembers often see humanity at its worst, which follows them home and takes a toll on their mental health. Unfortunately, this has resulted in an devastating increase in the number of veterans taking their own lives.

We know that healing takes time, love and support, and a connection to community. But in the meantime, I believe we must do more to ensure every veteran has access to the resources they need for a smooth transition. That’s why I’m proud to share that the House passed a bipartisan resolution this week to reinforce the importance of connecting our nation’s heroes with resources to help treat the invisible scars of war and prevent veteran suicide.

The bottom line is that no one who has put on the uniform to serve our country should face these challenges alone. While we can never repay our veterans for their service, I challenge you to think about how we can all do more to support them when they return home. Only then can we truly fulfill our commitment to having their back on and off the battlefield, which is exactly what this resolution is all about.
