The Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome

My oldest son Cole was born with Down syndrome, and he is one of the greatest blessings in my life. Getting to see the world through Cole’s eyes has made me a better mom and a better legislator. I’m reminded every day that the Down syndrome community is full of potential just waiting to be unleashed.

That’s why I am so excited to announce that I am leading the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Bob Casey (D-PA). As co-chairs of this task force, we will be dedicated to educating our colleagues and their staff on Capitol Hill about Down syndrome and the unique challenges the Down syndrome community face.

From highlighting innovative research to working to phase out the practice of employers paying subminimum wage, our mission will be to remove barriers and find new ways to enhance the quality of life for those with Down syndrome.

I’m incredibly grateful to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for helping me lead this important group. Together, I’m confident we can educate those around us and show the world that nobody is bound by the conditions of their birth.
