McMorris Rodgers Statement on Resolution Disapproving of National Emergency Declaration
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) released the following statement after voting in favor of a resolution to disapprove of President Trump national emergency declaration.
“I’m 100 percent in favor of President Trump’s wall, and today’s vote had nothing to do with the need to build it,” said Cathy. “Article I of the Constitution gives the legislative branch the exclusive power to make laws and set funding priorities. When that power is delegated to the executive or judicial branches, Representatives become elected bystanders and ‘We the People’ no longer have a voice. For that reason– the same reason I was against President Obama using his ‘pen and phone,’– I voted to disapprove of the national security declaration.”
NOTE: Cathy has consistently advocated for the need to restore Article I authority. In 2016, she authored an op-ed for the National Review in which she noted, “We face a serious problem in the United States — people feel they’ve lost their voice in government. By Congress delegating its authority to the executive and judicial branches, we’ve removed the American people from the process. They’re left as bystanders to the whims of executive overreach, and they’re watching the country they know and love slip away. Worse, they think their representatives are powerless to stop it.” Read the full column by clicking here.
