WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, lead Republican on the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce, sent letters to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to urge them to adopt the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) artificial intelligence guidance.
In the letters, Cathy says, “Our global race to develop and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) applications based on American values is central to our overall success. That is why I fully support the Trump Administration’s leadership with the recent budget proposal to double funding in AI related federal spending. However, any gains in U.S. competitiveness from an increase in R&D will be set back by any unnecessary and burdensome regulations.”
She continued to say that as independent agencies, CPSC and FTC are generally not bound by OMB Guidance. “However, I write to urge you to follow this thoughtful approach in any actions taken” by CPSC or FTC.
