Today, on World Down Syndrome Day, I am reminded of how grateful I am for the huge influence my son Cole has had on my life and our family. He truly is an amazing kid. I could have never imagined when we first got the diagnosis of his extra 21st chromosome just how positively he would impact this world.

Cole reminds us every day to live in the moment. He helps us to keep our focus on what really matters. At almost 15 years old, he has big dreams — to get married, become a dad, run for community chairman, start a band, write music, become a pastor, play in the NFL, build a place at the lake, and much more! Cole is always dreaming and always making plans.

And he’s not alone. The Down syndrome community is one of the most passionate, talented groups of individuals I’ve ever met. If you have a few minutes today, I encourage you to check out this documentary sharing the real stories of amazing people with Down syndrome. Their lives are worth living – and they are inspiring the world.

I’m so proud to be Cole’s mom, and I’m proud to be part of the disability community. I’m a better person and a better legislator because of his impact in my life. We can all learn from Cole that no matter the circumstances, each life is full of tremendous possibilities. Today and everyday, let’s celebrate the value and potential of every person’s life.
