On Saturday, I spoke at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery to dedicate a monument for one of Spokane's greatest heroes, Army Sgt. 1st Class Bruce A. Grandstaff, who posthumously received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service during the Vietnam War. In my speech, I said, 'From the soldiers who fought in the jungles of Vietnam, to the firefighters who stormed the World trade Center, to the brave servicemembers who continue to fight in Afghanistan, we are blessed to live amongst patriots who understand that 'freedom isn’t free' and that the mantle of liberty must be carefully passed down from generation to generation. Sergeant Grandstaff was one of those patriots, and by joining his family and band of brothers at today’s memorial and dedication, we celebrate his life, we celebrate his country, and we honor all those – like Sergeant Grandstaff – whose life and memory sustain this great nation.'
