WASHINGTON, D.C. – Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) released the following statement after introducing H.R. 5861, a bill that establishes a process by which the Secretary of the Interior may convey property in the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area (LRNRA) to allow cabin owners there to purchase the property on which those cabins are located.

“The owners of these cabins have long had a vested interest in maintaining their property and the land underneath it,” said McMorris Rodgers. “But instead of having the flexibility they need to help preserve this land, they face a costly and cumbersome negotiation over their contracts every five years, creating uncertainty at the same time the National Park Service needs resources to make improvements in these areas. This legislation will provide certainty and stability for these cabin owners while generating funds to make needed improvements to this area. It’s about striking a careful balance that ensures that our federal lands are properly maintained and enjoyed for generations to come.”
